Two Singapore Hawker Stalls Awarded Michelin Stars

singapore food stall sunday's groceryMichelin-starred restaurants are usually synonymous with fine dining - restaurants with white tablecloths, extensive wine lists, and tasting menus. But two of the latest Michelin-starred establishments in Singapore take the Guide to a whole nother level... That is: street level.Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle at Crawford Lane and Chinatown's Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle were both awarded one Michelin star early last week. Both stalls are located inside cooked food centers - shared areas that are occupied by numerous food stalls, often without air conditioning.Singapore is known for its local cooked food centers that serve up everything from savory favorites like chicken rice, chili crab, dim sum, and prawn noodles to sweet desserts such as soy bean curd, ice kachang, and chendol. The prices are affordable and the ingredients are always fresh. The recognition of these food stalls is a good start to an otherwise fine-dining-only roster for Singapore's Michelin Guide, including Joël Robuchon, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, and Restaurant André. The Guide advises that one star rated venues are “high-quality cooking, worth a stop”. Image Courtesy Reuters
